Our Bid

The Hart House Debating Club is bidding to host worlds in 2012. Please find here a summary what HH2012 will look like. A more complete bid will be released shortly.

Debating & Judging

HH2012 will have soft team cap of 360 teams, with the possibility of adding more later. We commit to insuring a high standard of judging through offering subsidies to accomplished adjudicators and through the use of our enormous local judging pool.

Costs & Registration

Registration for HH2012 is currently set at CAD 625 (€400). Registration will take place online, through an automated system which will attempt to mitigate the use of automatic registration through the use of CAPTCHA and other modern security practices.

Organization

The HH2012 bid is being managed by a committee of dedicated Hart House students, staff, and volunteers. The tournament itself will be convened by a member of this committee, to be chosen later.

Location & Venues

Debaters and judges will be staying at Toronto’s luxurious Fairmont Royal York in Toronto’s bustling financial district. The Royal York was built in 1929, and is a stunning example of 1920s architecture

Rounds will be held at the University of Toronto’s historic downtown campus. All rounds will be within a 5 minute walk from the General Assembly, held in one of the many large lecture theatres.

Transit

Travel between the hotel and tournament will be provided by the Toronto Transit Commission. Attendees’ ID tags will also function as access passes to Toronto’s subway, street-car, light-rail, and bus systems. Both the hotel and the University are situated right on the subway line, allowing for speedy transit between venues without waiting for buses, traffic, or slow arrivals. It will also allow tournament attendees to explore the city and return late from socials without ever having to pay a cab.

Socials & Entertainment

TBA. But we promise that they will be amazing. Anyone who has ever been to the Hart House Invitational knows that we mean that promise.

A World-Class City

Recently selected to host the 2015 Pan-American games, Toronto is world-class city with the capacity and institutions to hold large-scale events. A cosmopolitan centre, Toronto will offer a wide array of entertainment, dining, shopping, and cultural experiences to suit every taste and budget. We aim to bring an experience that is far more than just the venues, we are presenting a week spent in the centre of a fascinating city.
